Future Looks Bright for Battle Gaming

Brennon Meiners of Warlord Sports commissioned a great market study of the medieval combat sports and live action role-playing. The results were astounding. Roughly 1/3 of all Americans are aware of medieval combat sports. There were many other interesting findings.

Will Open Battle Gaming™ be OGL?

I continue to do research into the licensing issues around Open Battle Gaming™ and the use of the Open Game License. I believe that my previous lawyer was not skilled enough to make a valid evaluation of the situation. I have located a new lawyer and I am now putting together the as much background information on the subject (this saves money with the lawyers).

I spent significant time searching the internet for references to OGL and who were using it. I found that there is at least one company that is using it to license a game that is not based on the Wizards 3.5 System. I read and reread the text and it appears that the license is generic enough to do this.

I then search all the case law databases for references to OGL. I found that there is no case law at the state or federal law involving this license. That would indicate that if any suits have been filed they have been settled out of court.

The deadlines are looming to get Open Battle Gaming™ out the door, so there will be a decision soon.

Play Testing is Complete for this Year

There will be no Battle Game play testing on October 24th, 2009 in Fort Collins. It has been cancelled because of conflicting activities. This pretty much finishes up this seasons play testing. I do not expect to host any more battle game activities until March 2010.

If you are attending the weapons construction workshop, please consider bringing some supplies. I have many supplies which I will happily donate, but my supply chest is not bottomless. Typical stuff such as foam camping pads, pool noodles, tape, cores (PVC pipe/kite spar/fiberglass rods) and cloth are always useful.

Licensing Problems for Open Battle Gaming System

My lawyer has issue with the Open Game License v1.0 that was published by the Wizards of the Coast. The plan is to look at the various options and perhaps create a new License. There will be no general rules published to the Internet until this issue is worked out. I hope to have it cleared up by the end of October.

Positive Player Feedback on System and Book

Quote from one of the September 5th playtesters:

"I really like the way your system works. I had a lot of fun and I think that the way you have the rules set up makes for a more diverse system of play, without having to introduce a class system for players. and your instructions were well put together. Helping my friend make his sword was much easier with your instructions than with the tutorials i tried to use (the ones which produced my clubsword)." - John
